This is a 35 year old philosophy and I wish it would stop getting parroted as if it was still true. Being a police officer, despite what one might assume, tends to be monotonous and boring. I've seen a high IQ person go through all the bullshit to get hired and make it through training just to quit because the job "wasn't what he thought it would be" i.e. he was bored. But it's usually not a problem anymore and is less of a concern relative to having all your employees be retarded, so most departments want new hires to have some kind of degree or to be a little older and the nice rich departments all mandate having a degree for their officers.
