The "Big Ask" is never what the final deal looks like.

Greenland is barely populated, mostly by native american inuit types, is colonial territory that is easy to demonize today, and buying off natives with promised gibs and cash for life would be easy and cost less than a year of gwot . Most living there would support gaining US rights while getting native american gibs plus purchase gibs.


In that sense it was a real threat. Because the US could easily get most of greenland wanting to join the usa instead of belonging to a nation on the other side of an ocean. In that context it then wouldn't even be conquest but helping greenlanders get what they want, which wouldn't look as bad internationaly.
Denmark certainly realized this and acted accordingly.

Canada was different because you cannot just promise the entire Canadian population lifetime gibs, and they are already independent.
So Canada was for show, but I could legit see Greenland being taken if needed.
