I'm a New Zealander. Here are some reasons why we will not be a superpower in no particular order.

- Despite our large size there is very little arable land. We do have a great deal of pastoral land, but very little arable land and what we do have we are losing as it has next to no protection from urban sprawl and development because we have a very short sighted government.

- We have had the same irrational mass immigration policy as the rest of the western world. Now a large proportion of our population is foreign born. Contributing to the competency crisis that we as a the rest of the west is suffering from and a lack of social cohesion. This policy is supported by both our major parties.

-We have very short sighted government focussed only on the short term. Both major parties lack competence and the minor parties they must be in coalition with to be in power are by and large insane or completely idiotic. This has led to many problems. The short term focus means our government focuses on short term gdp growth at the expense of our future. Hence why have mass migration pushing house prices up. The gdp goes up but we have all the attendant problems of mass migration and high house prices. Our productivity growth has been sluggish to nonexistent for many years now because the government doesn't think about actual wealth but "gdp must go up".

The government we have now is run by an incompetent former CEO who was incredibly poor performing at that job and is incredibly poor performing at his current job in coalition with lolbertarian wackos. Their current genius idea is to tear up all our environmental protections which sustain our long term future and local democracy so we can build more houses for immigrants. GDP will go up but New Zealand will look like a delhi slum in short order.

I would still rate Australia with a small chance as a future power even though they are suffering from many of the same problems I have outlined for New Zealand and I think their government is probably even worse than ours. With their size and natural capital I think they have more leeway to turn things around. Whereas I find it very difficult to see how New Zealand can turn things around at this point especially with our current government. Argentinian style decline seems most likely.

Its incredibly difficult to say, I think the most likely scenario is similar with bronze age collapse and there wont be a future world power until much later on, maybe China survives the way Egypt did back then but similarly they will be so weak that they will be a regional power at best. The economies of all major powers or potential major powers are so interconnected that if the international financial system buckles its nigh impossible to replace with an autarkic system quickly, this goes for pretty much any country, I could see places like North Korea and Iran do pretty well and punch far beyond their weight because they are used to not being part of the international system, but they wont be world powers or anything

A lot also depends on if current great powers nuke each other in the near future which is a non neglible possibility imo
