>it should be illegal to sell online games without an expiry date because i personally dislike game shutdowns
>all games become subscription based, making game preservation exorbitantly expensive

There are other many, many other options you utter retard.
The simplest thing would be to simply release dedicated servers for the game and make a last small update for the game enabling connecting to a custom server.

Having dedicated servers used to be the default, most non-MMO games released before 2010 can still be played today, though some will require a third party server browser.

Before you make some retarded arguement about the unfeasibility remember all multiplayer games already have dedicated servers, they just aren't always available for end users to host.

what law is stopping developers from releasing dedicated servers?

>Having dedicated servers used to be the default
It's easy to imagine a setup where servers can't possibly run outside some weird proprietary framework hosted by a third party company. It's not 2003 anymore.
Try to imagine a scenario where some company makes a service that allows game developers to very easily make online multiplayer games. Everything is hosted on these servers. Now any idiot can make an online game in a month and the market is flooded with them. Who is responsible for keeping the games running? The third party company or the game developer? What happens when the third party company goes bankrupt and shuts down its services?

I don't know. Why not ask the game devs who choose not to do these things?

It's better this way, at least you know to avoid them and buy just single player DRM-free games. Those still come out and are already compliant.

>all online games become subscription based
>no one is paying the exhorbitant subscription prices for ea or ubi's latest live service trash
>single player games with a focus on story become the mainstream again
>companies that actually did the subscription thing can't compete with the resurgence of AAA games that are actually good and finally go out of business
sounds good to me
