the most extreme examples of development in the xx century were from african level dictatorships to the most advanced economies in the world (taiwan, south korea) 2 things those countries have in common is that they are not only a dictatorship but also an ethnostate, i dont say that its a prerequisite for extreme success with a dictatorship because chile while not as good was way ahead of the curve, it was a shithole in the 70s and now its low high level and its not an ethnostate (but theres a clear caste system).
but democracies are more stables, less risk that the despot refuses to release power when the job is done
