It doesn't really matter what the next hot thing is, just that there is a next big thing and it gets sufficient response. It is all stimuli put into a system so meta data can be farmed from the reactions, creating a giant amount of information that can be used to study human reaction to everything, then hone future reporting on like topics in a way to train the masses to view things in a way acceptable to our masters. Each topic, moral question, political issue, what have you, is pushed down your throat ad nauseam to train the computers how to better program you.
