The idea that the US can just abandon all of its geopolitical interests is a ridiculous one at face value. It shows a really simplistic understanding of the importance of global trade to the US, the USD, alliances, etc. None of these things are unique to the US either. Historically there is no major power that ever decided to do something so self destructive.
In China for example Xi doesn't have people around him saying 'You know, we should stop funding things like the belt and road project, and all that aid to Africa (where we're getting minerals out of their countries) too. We should scrap it all, that's China first!'
It's an obviously idiotic idea and no one would tell Xi that. Same applies to Russia and every other country you can think of.
It's only in the US that this sillyness gets any airtime.
Once you accept that isolationism is a dumb idea then the next step is taking a long hard look at the reality of the world and what is actually in America's interest to do.
Most people don't get past this first step, which is why they become lolberts or outright commies or nazis like /pol/. In a way the commies and nazis are at least honest because they admit they hate the USA so they advocate for policies that would destroy it. Lolberts are stuck in cloud 9 where they think all these policies would somehow help the country.
Everyone else is stuck in a weird limbo where they have to pick political ideas but without a coherent worldview. Some people become realists like Kissinger, others become neocons, there's not many other choices that seem viable.
Tbqh the neocon word is very vague in itself though. It's more idealist than the realists in some ways still.
Technically by /pol/'s definition every single President was a 'neocon'.
