300K killed and 2-3x that the wounded on both sides, just as anon said, but, if you look at some sources, like ukrainians having >100K who lost limbs by the end of last year, then the number could much much higher (if applying same death to limb loss ratios as in previous wars). Also, a ton of ukrainian soldiers desert, well over 200K in total according to russia, western sources are hush-hush about it and only mention numbers like "30k from the start of the year" etc. the amount of desertions are probably isnane either way.

I derived numbers for the Ukrainian side about a year into the war. It's the one I give people. My own post from the archive.

i took the statistics some german NGOs published regarding amputees in Ukraine, took the amputee, seriously injured (+48 hours out of combat) and death statistics from America during operation iraqi freedom, did some elementary-school arithmetic and estimated at least 600,000 losses for the ukrainians. and that's assuming the Ukrainians were fighting at least as well as the Americans did against the Iraqis. and that was not even two years into the war.
the numbers convinced my bro. he asked me why they were not surrendering and how could they sustain themselves. but i have no fucking idea other than NATO wanting to fight to the last Ukrainian.
here, have fun do the numbers yourself, all papers say amputation rates for us soldiers throughout modern conflicts are similar.

Also, Prigozhin himself claimed Wagner had 40000 casualties and 20000 dead, so 1) Russia is not reporting those. and 2) those fought the bloodiest battles, so that death and casualty ratio is, if closer to the average, on the exaggerated side

wars such as these are fought over long-term prospects. If Ukraine enters the EU and Nato, it would mean russia loses it power-projection into the bosporus and subsequently the middle east, AND russia's defensive capabilities will strongly be diminished. In essence, It would turn russia from a global power, into a regional power (and we haven't even talked about the maidan yet)... so yes, from russia's point of view, these demands are indeed ludicrous, and their trategic objectives are considered to be of prime importance. It will never ever let go of crimea and donbass, luhanks, etc. They simply can't.

I'm not even taking sides, but that's just the reality of this conflict. Period.
