Because for most people life is going through arbitrary social rituals. You go to school, you get your first love, your drivers license, first job, marriage, children and then grandchildren. You'e just a breathing meat puppet in this social play, and people want you to do your part so they can fulfill their next persona. There is little to no actual care for others in all of this.
When my sister had her first uncle, I saw people begin to create fully fictional persona which they act, and what child needs to be like so the fantasy gets fulfilled. Even I was asked what kind of uncle I want to be, in which I replied "one that is just himself". Its all very disgusting. I would see some sense in all this, if we lived in society where these social rituals and offspring were necessary for survival. But that is not the case.
