French cities are fucking depressing. Gray, lifeless, boring. No activities, no opportunities, nothing. Shops close at 8 PM, and by 10 PM, the streets are literally dead.

Even Paris, the CAPITAL of France, turns into a fucking graveyard after dark. And going for a walk at night is just asking to get mugged by 'youth' from the suburbs.

The countryside is even worse. It's literally dead. No charm, no life, just gloom and oppression. Nothing like the American heartland or even the Japanese inaka.

French wages are miserable and the tax rate is crazy. I'm talking 30, 40, even 60% if you're self-employed. With this much tax you'd expect at least some quality public services, but no :)

All the tax money goes to social welfare (unemployment, family allowance, RSA...) because the economy is absolute dogshit and millions of people wouldn't afford to live without state welfare.

What a fucking hell. Can't wait to GTFO after my studies.

Most American cities are not NYC. Most are done around 9pm. Yeah there are clubs but there are clubs in Paris open late as well.

We have states with cities like Shreveport Louisiana that basically look like third world countries. Horrible roads all through the south. Bridges that feel like they might collapse any day. So before you go pining for lower taxes, understand the money saved will just get pocketed by the rich assholes. They don't care if the roads go to hell. They can just go to their second home in a different state. There is a tendency for foreigners who aren't actually familiar with America to nostalgize shit they have a distorted, Hollywood, media driven view of. Drive through poor white areas in Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia and you're seeing Methville USA. This country has been a decaying shithole since the 70s.

That's your experience as a tourist. France is a museum-country: it's great to visit, it has beautiful monuments, beautiful nature... but once the novelty wears off and you actually have to live there it fucking sucks.
It has both the problems of Northern Europe (cold people, high cost of living, boring cities, etc.) and Southern Europe (low wages, bad public services, nepotism, etc.), with none of the advantages that make living in Spain or Germany bearable.

I went to college near Utica NY and some of the roads and houses looked like they had been hit by artillery. There would be parts where the pavement of a street just stopped existing and was dirt periodically.

this is so true as a non-french person who's lived in both paris and provincial cities. the average city outside paris is genuinely dead after 7-8pm except for student bars. the only people walking around city centres after that time are roadmen and winos, if you're a normal person you have no business there. the amount of poverty on display is shocking. i went back to the city i studied in just before christmas and sat on a terrace having drinks with friends, in the space of two hours i'd say six different beggars came up to us. also provincial cities are no less pozzed than paris is. i was in normandy recently and took a bus from caen city centre to the seaside, i passed through a ZUP where literally every single woman was wearing a hijab. these places exist in every city in the country now from what i've seen.

Je bosse à l'hopital alors oui j'ai pas ce problème mais la réduction des lits (qui est un terme pour dire qu'on a besoin de moins de medecins, infirmiers et aide soignants ) est vraiment terrifiantes.
