If the US had ever established a forward base to threaten Russian resources, who would get control over them? Note that Iran never was absorbed into the USSR nor the US sphere of influence despite the immense amount of British influence. What I'm more interested in is: why did the USSR collapse? They won on every front, they had infrastructure built from Europe to Shandong province. It doesn't make any sense? Was the gosplan a scam?
