If you have any space that can be used for such, you should be growing edible perennial plants.

Food prices are already getting insane and most of our countries aren't even officially in WWIII yet, so it's going to get absolutely bonkers as the military starts sucking up all the available calories on the market. Perennials take a few years to really get going, so if you want your "victory garden" to contain things other than annuals, you really want to start right now.

You should absolutely check your hardiness zone and find plants that can survive at least one zone higher and lower. It'd suck to have one cold winter or hot summer and lose them.
If it's something that isn't necessarily to everyone's taste right off the bush, that also makes them less likely to get stolen.

Aronia berries have the most antioxidants of basically all fruits and making a jam out of them is easy as hell. It's even auto-fertile, so you only need one.

If you have very limited amounts of space, the recommended strategy is to plant a tree, then plant a fruiting vine that will climb the tree and then plant some shrubs to fill out the rest of the space.

You could hypothetically get a tree that has been grafted to produce multiple different fruit at the same time.

>Kiwi in Canada?
Surprising, I know. The kiwiberries (roughly grape sized, smooth skinned and can be eaten whole), specifically, are rather cold tolerant.
I didn't plant that specific cultivar, but it's one of the most eye-catching varieties so it makes more sense for these threads.
The colour is actually like strawberries where they get it from exposure to sunlight, so if you want them to really be vibrantly coloured you need to trim the leaves that cover the fruit.

I've been growing figs for years. I've got 24 trees. I grow them in 10 gallon pots and bring in them to my basement over the winter. I've got a bunch of varieties - Chicago Hardy, brown turkey, RDB, Malta black, Armenian, brooklyn white, alma, nordland, and more. There is nothing like a fresh fig. They sometimes sell them at the grocery store, but they are all picked a little early because they have basically zero shelf life and won't hold up to transport when fully ripe.

They are super easy to grow from cuttings, so if you like growing things and have room in a garage or basement (or live somewhere warm enough to be able to grow them in ground) give a go. It is so much fun to order a stick in the mail, watch it grow root and leaves, then a year later have an impressive looking tree. They grow like weeds.

Yeh, I plan to plant more in March. Plums and grapes and maybe an apple tree. My fig trees are producing, but they have shallow roots still and the figs aren't good yet. I also had a hummingbird nest in my fig tree this spring it was cute

Nice birb :D
There are a bunch of prunus hybrids that are worth checking out, too.
Like there are cherry-plums (chums) or plum-apricot (pluots or plumcots) and there are even some where both the flesh AND the almond are edible.

If it's warm enough in your area, you could also grow citrus. Kumquats are a bit more cold tolerant than the others and they're also neat in that the skin is edible, so you eat them whole.

Or shell out for an already mature plant. I've also heard there are varietals that fruit much faster, but I doubt their fruit is very good

True date palms only produce fruit in a dry arid climate. You can grow them in Florida, but they'll never flower.
