What do you plan on using it for? You need assisted opening? A super strong lock? Vosteed is probablymy favorite budget knife company. They typically use 14C28N steel, which is probably the best budget knife steel. I bought a Porcupine the a couple months ago and it's nice. My favorite knife I own is the Spderco Manix 2 Lightweight. The best bang for the buck is Hogue. They have MagnaCut (best all-around steel) knives that are like $50-100 cheaper than the competition and they're made in the US instead of China.

Start with the Kershaw-Emerson CQB-7 or a benchmade SOCP.
The Kershaw has the wave feature and the socp is awesome for grappling and clinching.

Get a Cold Steel knife with a tri-ad lock and a wave function opening notch. The tri-ad lock has proven itself to be the strongest locking mechanism in the industry. And the wave function notch allows you to automatically open your knife while simultaneously pulling it out of your pocket.

I got my Shaman like 5 years ago and have had two Para 2s and never had any issues. Centering the blade is can usually be fixed by adjusting the pivot. I usually disassemble my knives when I get them to clean and lube everything anyway.

I really like the Kershaw AM-4. I've re-bought it several times due to losing them on bike trips or from falling out of my pocket. Very thin and light (carbon scales) but still cheap, under $40 USD

A lot of the commonly recommended knives have blades so thick you can't even cut an apple with them, this one has a nice thin blade that is useful for cutting everyday things with. Just don't use it as a screwdriver
