I say this as an ultra weeb who studied abroad in Japan and lived in Tokyo for 3 years, also going back to Japan once a year until now.
Long story short, I work in a very specific field and was invited by a Chinese company to lecture for their students. It was a one week bootcamp course in Beijing, but I ended up traveling for almost a month. I went to Shanghai, Beijing, Chong Qing, Chendu, Dali, and Guangzhou.
Ok first of, Japan has gotten extremely gay recently. I speak pretty good Japanese and I noticed that a lot of the staff at places seem dismissive and rude to foreigners. I guess this is understandable since over 40 million tourists are expected for 2025, but you would NEVER have experienced this even just 3 years ago. It really seems like Japan is becoming a frustrated nation where their people can't travel due to the weak yen, and must serve rich foreigners who treat Japan like a theme park. On top of that, you now have south east asians like Thais and Vietnamese coming and throwing their money around, which must be humiliating for Japan... so I get it, but the experiences there recently have really soured my taste.
The quality of food has gone down too. It's still really cheap, but it seems like businesses are trying to make more profit now instead of being honorable and doing things fairly like before. In a way, Japan is becoming "Chinese".
Now, when I went to China I was super worried. I actually brought a bunch of MRE packs in my suitcase because I wasn't sure if the food would give me food poisoning (you hear all this crazy shit about Chinese people putting wood grain alcohol in beer, gutter oil, etc), but holy fuck, the food was amazing.
