As someone that lives in coastal Massachusetts our beaches are closed for the same reason. It's because a long many rivers communities have old insufficient sewage treatment capacity that is combined with storm water. So when you get any rain the treatment plants are forced to discharge raw and partially treated sewage into the river. Nobody wants to spend the money to upgrade. On my river the worst offenders are Haverhill and Manchester NH. Fucking shit hole cities full of browns and drug addicts. The wealthy majority white cities have upgraded but we still pay the price for other people being stupid. Even after all of our effort to keep the river clean.
