This is a very common idea. No, it makes a lot of difference, psychologically. 99% of our suffering is rooted in things which are not here and now, but instead are just memories, extrapolations, predictions etc, mental abstractions, things you have no proof actually exist.
One example is feeling bad because you have missed out on something or are missing out on something.
>I wasted my 20s and 30s and XYZ are now too late for me to do.
>I was slow and got out too late every single day of the summer, so I didn't experience much of the sunny days.
>All these beautiful girls are walking around and I'm not getting any of it.
>I'm in prison and I don't get to be part of all the stuff going on out there.

Say for example you are angry about having wasted a summer. Where is that summer? You can't prove that the past ever existed. You can't prove anything exists beyond here and now. What is there to miss out on, if it's not right here and now, and if it doesn't actually exist? Well you have no proof it ever existed. So you're being upset about something, the existence of which you have no proof of. 99% of things we are upset about, worry about, are sad about, anxious, depressed etc about we don't KNOW exist, or ever existed, or ever will exist.
