They have no choice. They made their entire personality "the Trump guy" and they can't back away from it now, so they just have to rationalize or ignore, and increasingly you can't rationalize it. People hate to acknowledge fault or being wrong even in passing, mean-nothing arguments, imagine how they feel about admitting they were wrong about a fanatical belief they've had for ten years now.
