The USSR invented the holocaust and generalplan ost to explain away the mass graves created by the NKVD. Until the 1990s the Holocaust was promoted as impacting slavs more than jews. Boomers and gen X still believe that Hitler gassed 7 or 8 million Russians in the camps.

The holocaust was used by the soviets as a way to distract from their own death camps (gulags).
Besides, saving the cute and wholesome jewerinoos made the Red Army look like good guys on the international stage instead of being exposed as savages.
