Persian influence in China isn't a secret at all, neither was the influence of Manichean cults, or Buddhism which was spread by a Persian prince Bodhidharma. I never get to speak with people interested in this. But what's your opinion on Jesuits in China. Around 1610 or so they reformed the language under the 'Kangxi radicals' prior to this they had roughly 510 radicals and it's so impossible to read that even if you learned classical Chinese the language before this is almost entirely inaccessible. When Francis Xavier went to Japan he noted that there were no secular texts and everything was some pseudo inscription language used for moral lessons similar to the old desert father paradoxes. Virtually every koan can be paralleled with the desert fathers. Furthermore the Khitan (literally Cathay the old word for Chinese) and Tangut scripts are entirely unreadable by anyone and aren't even considered to be related to the Chinese language at all despite looking exactly like it. I'm incredibly skeptical of Jesuits in China, but I know no one else who really reads into this. I read a book called 'Manufacturing Confucius' and that's about as far as I found.

there's a Buddhist lesson in that, trying to understand all the god lore is not very enlightening so why not shit it up and go wild? then the student will be so burnt out by its absurdism they will drop it. I don't know whether the Jesuits and translators would have picked up on that spiritual lesson if they were approaching it from a foreign religion, they just had to make sense of it.

All of the oldest books detailing the formal use of kana were also written by Jesuits. They had no contact with Confucianism prior to this, they weren't even a tributary of China until this weird Buddhist secret society called the White Lotus Society took over Ming in the 15th century. They spent 500 years completely isolated from China after Tang and the only connection they had was through Buddhism.
