The people making these threads are such dullards. There are maintenance guys working on every cathedral today using the same methods of cutting limestone with handsaws, drilling in wooden dowels where needed and repairing/replacing stone blocks. They just rebuilt Notre Dame using traditional methods. The Catholic church still has architectural guilds where they know all of the design principles needed.
The main reason we don't build many new ones is that we don't make enough new cities. They built one in New York in the 1800s that only took a few decades to complete and if we built them today it would take under 5 years with machinery.

The only reason why these were possible even in those days is that they didn't have our vast array of machines and materials, everything took ages to erect, so they took their time and played with designs, added thing in time to improve.
