Is self-improvement a meme? It seems like nothing I do can get me out of my shitty situation. Maybe joining a religion will help. Maybe doing charity work in a religion or outside a religion will help. I'm thinking maybe if I help other people God will help me, because helping myself doesn't help, and praying to God doesn't help. I tried both a church and a Muslim group a decade ago but quit because as someone who's been a loner for most of my life having a lot of people around me was annoying, I also got fed up with several people.

But what I was mostly thinking was that helping YOURSELF doesn't work, but maybe if you instead help OTHERS, then God helps you. Following a religion also while you do things like fasting and avoiding alcohol, it's also about doing something for God, while self-improvement is focused on doing things for yourself, and maybe that's an important difference. Zakat (charity) and Sawm (fasting) are annual obligations, and Hajj (pilgrimmage) is a lifetime goal to do at least once.

Islam will change your life for the better if you actually practice it. If you don't keep the obligations, you are not Muslim. It is mandatory.
