>Europe's petrochemical industry is unravelling under a wave of plant closures after years of losses and a rapid expansion of global capacity led by China.

>High production costs and ageing plants have left European producers struggling, making the region increasingly dependent on imports of primary chemicals such as ethylene and propylene, the building blocks for plastics, pharmaceuticals and countless industrial goods.

>A wave of closures and disposals is reshaping the global petrochemical sector as companies around the world rethink their exposure to markets as they adjust to capacity build-up in China and higher costs in Europe.

>Up to 40% of the EU's ethylene capacity — which totals 24.5 million metric tons — is at high or medium risk of closure

>North America's ethylene capacity will grow to 58 million metric tons by 2030 from 54 million currently

>China, meanwhile, will add 6.5% to its ethylene capacity every year between 2025 and 2030, when it will produce nearly 87 million metric tons of ethylene annually

Petrochemical industry in America and the Middle East can compete just fine, because the main reason for uncompetitiveness is energy and feedstock costs
https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/appec-chinas-ethylene-output-costs-1200-1300t-lower-than-europe-shenghong-2022-09-28/

Slave labor might work for making t-shirts. It doesn't really work for the chemical industry

If not paying debts is a magic trick that makes a trillion dollar industry operate cheaper, then maybe Europe should try that (it doesn't work)

Not even, Its all energy prices. They're not going out of business because they aren't allowed to poison the locals by dumping chemicals. In modern industry energy prices are the main factor.

The value of ethane export controls as leverage is arguably overblown. Only about 8-10% of China's ethylene output is from ethane feedstock, and those of China's crackers that run on ethane are flexible and can use naphta or LPG just as well. Naphta is more expensive than ethane but they don't have to shut down if they can't get ethane.

Meanwhile, there's not really nowhere else ready to absorb all that American ethane

US dominates export of ethane because they are the only ones who have invested heavily in ethane export infrastructure, but the US is only responsible for about 50% of global ethane production, which suggests export controls wouldn't be effective in the long term

I think export controls on other things such as LEAP turbofans was a far greater concern for Xi

I can't find anything about US export controls on propane, only on ethane. Also, it seems the US is far less dominant in propane (and LPG) than in ethane

European manufacturing is predicated upon cheap unlimited oil and natural gas from Russia.

Vladimir Putin wanted to build an economic zone that extended from Spain through western Europe to China and southeast Asia. This Euro Asian trade bloc threatened the current Anglo American centered trading bloc that Europe now suffers under. This is why those that control the Anglo American economic trade zone always work toward the destruction of Russia and chose Ukraine as their hammer. This is why the people that control the Anglo American economic trade zone installed the homosexual jewish actor Zelensky. Unfortunately, for the people of Ukraine, Russian mettle is proving stronger than the hammer NATO chose to attack Russia with. Ukraine will be discarded and forgotten as soon as it is no longer useful to the global homo demons.

Perhaps if they just take money from the public and give it to the petrochemical industry to keep it afloat, then all problems will be solved and everyone will be happy :)

I recommend at least a 10% tax increase on every european. That should do the trick, and they like paying taxes anyway. It gives them good things like a petrochemical industry!
