It's a kind of perceptual problem where more fat is perceived as more femininity. In any time but the last ~40 years, this would be a generally good rule to unsure that prospective female mates had adequate stores of nutrients to bring a child to term safely. Back in the day a woman who was, say, size 14 or 16 would be considered the outer limit of non-circus, almost-acceptable fatness. The level of obesity we have today and for the last few decades has never really existed in the entirety of human history.
