The idea that more than a handful of northern whites (everyone hated the "abolitionists") gave a fuck about the black slaves is insane. The northern whites hated blacks more than the southern whites did.
The north wanted high tariffs to protect their manufacturing, while the south wanted low tariffs to better trade their agricultural products, especially cotton, with Europe. If the north let the south be a separate country, all the European trade would go to the south due to the lower tariffs. Lincoln even said the south could go as long as they had the same high tariff and paid it to the north (don't believe me, look it up).
Wars are about money and resources, not freeing some fucking slaves or protecting the rights of Englishmen or whatever twattle they use to sell the next war to the poor bastards who are sent to die.

Dropping the stigma of slavery had more to do with global optics post french revolution, much like with the pro worker marxists who sank their fangs into US politics in the 1920s; british political expats influenced by the french revolution poisoned the unions state governments in the 1830s which later became the lincolnite republicans who hated the true americans down south. The north launched economic warfare on the south starting in the mid 1840s, demanded high tariffs and wanted to cripple their way of life.
