Think of matter as the energetic ground state of perception. Its seemingly very stable and slow to shift. But when you charge matter up with electricity it ionizes and turns to plasma, very energetic, more energy contained within the volume. The higher the energy level the more variation of information can be contained. If you have all matter at the ground state its all just 0. If you have an oscillation within that same matter its a range of states between 1 and -1. The higher the energy level, and the more simultaneous coherent waves there are, the higher the resolution of information that can be contained within the same material object.
Dreaming is just changing the tuning of perception within matter. Instead of just perceiving the ground state of existence, you tap into more of these alternate wave forms of possibility.

The waves in the body can be coupled with a field of consciousness outside the body, and perceive things from the universe. Its a bit like perceving not just the brain and biological substrate as a medium of your awareness, but you tap into a type of energy within all matter, and you can perceive things outside your body as if they are part of the same field of consciousness as your awareness within the body. Since its no longer in the ground state, the range of perceptions are no longer locked into what is physically apparent in the universe, and infinitely expands into more possibilities the more awareness grows adept at utilizing this expanded range of perception.

Most 'advanced' entities in the universe use this field all the time, and that is the easiest way to contact extradimensional intelligence. Since they have been using it far longer than we have, they know way more about how to use it than we do. There are factions of humans who are also utilizing it, but also keeping it secret.
