When boomers were in their teens & 20s the barriers of entry for almost every job available was significantly lower than it is today. On the radio the other night the host was interviewing a naturalist professor of some university and he was speaking about his early life as a young man in the 70s. He went on to describe when he was 18 an industrial site specializing in nuclear power or materials opened up near where he lived and he got a job there, rising to some kind of specialist technician after 7-8 years making $100,000 in 1980 ($390,127 today). He left that job to pursue his passion of becoming an educated naturalist and spending as much time outdoors as possible.

While a nice story, that would literally never happen today. In the same scenario, you would not be able to get a job at such a facility at 18 with no credentials unless your dad was in upper management. Before the plant even opens they would have interviewed people from all over the country and world and likely have a full lineup of asians or jeets ready to operate the plant on day 1. To even have a chance you would need a 4 year degree in anything materials science related, workplace safety certificates, forklift license, highest first aid level, and a minimum level of work experience.

In the boomers days if you were intelligent they would hire and train you to be proficient in your job but these days the hiring process is so disconnected from humanity that they try and hire someone between "under/over qualified" and a bunch of other metrics that chances are lowers your likelihood of even being talked to by a human being. Throw AI resume-scanning/sorting software in there and you're essentially just playing the lottery at this point.
