Produced water is surfacing over a large area near Maidstone, Saskatchewan, Canada.

This oilfield is currently SAGD, using steam to liquify and extract heavy oil / bitumen.

1. Hole in casing, which may have been repaired, and surfacing fluid is simply trapped fluid, which will dissipate.
2. Fault in caprock.
3. Unknown well allowing migration of steam from oil zone to water zone.

While articles typically reference the oil company's (Cenovus) misrepresentations of the issue being a wellbore breach, the issue ongoing for 2 months indicate the issue could be breached caprock of the formation.

If this is handled like other contaminated soil issues, they'll probably offload the remediation to whoever wants to develop the land further. That seems to be how it works in Calgary, there's a section next to the Bow River that was used to treat power poles back in the day, polluted as fuck, and now there's a car dealership there because technically all that's required for that is a parking lot. Any plans to build something worthwhile will require that the new owners address the shitty soil quality as part of their purchasing obligations.

If you live locally, the best course of action is to get your well water tested for hydrocarbons. Not sure what the cost would be, but if you know what to look for then you can limit the overall costs.

Look at it as an investment, with evidence you can prove your case, sue for damages, and glean some of that sweet, sweet oil money

Also, evidence is more easily provable if you have before and after stars. If this JUST happened then well water contamination might be limited, only to increase later as it becomes more pronounced. Would be great if you had well water quality results from before this, but like any prairie farmer the quality of the water is determined largely by how drinkable it is. Unfortunately, that's not admissible in court.
