You should care about the well-being of your people. They should also be allowed to decide for their children what they think is best. These ideas are not mutually exclusive.

Well that depends. If you're my neighbor and my son is friends with your son and I'm friends with you, it would be in our self interest and wise to at least nominally care about the well-being of each other's children (i.e the village watches out for those of the villages, tribe takes care of the tribe).
