They didn't. One of the reasons the initial invasion was such a clusterfuck is because very few of the troops involved even knew they were invading Ukraine. They seriously believe Putin and Lavrov that it was all just military exercises, and sold their petrol allotment on the black market accordingly. Then they were ordered to move into Ukraine but still didn't realize it until they ran out of fuel and started getting shot at from every direction.
