53-year-old teacher from Dordrecht was seriously injured in a stabbing on Wednesday evening during a school musical for eighth graders at Het Palet elementary school in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands.
The attack took place as children and parents gathered at the De Haven Cultural Center, where the performance was being held.
According to De Telegraaf, citing eyewitness accounts, the teacher was trying to calm an escalating argument between three men when one of them pulled a knife and stabbed him. Witnesses say the teacher was not involved in the dispute and was likely acting to prevent violence.
Emergency responders rushed him to the hospital with serious injuries. An air ambulance was also at the scene.
“He wasn’t the target,” said one person at the scene. “He came between two men who were about to fight.” Another described the alleged attacker as “not right in the head” and known for being aggressive. Sources also said another man involved had a criminal background.
One man sitting near the victim told Algemeen Dagblad, “I didn’t realize it at first. Suddenly, there was blood all over the hallway, and the teacher was lying on the floor. This was premeditated; otherwise, you wouldn’t bring a knife to a musical.”
Another eyewitness told Alblasserdams Nieuws, “I saw two men enter. One of them buttoned up his jacket. I thought that was strange, because you’d expect to take your jacket off on a night like this. They walked away to the front, and then suddenly there was a blow. Those two came in deliberately to grab a father. They must have been alerted by another parent, I think. They knew exactly where he was. One man immediately punched the father in the audience. The other guy was still standing next to me, and he stayed put. He suddenly grabbed a big pot and threw it.”
