He was charged and convicted of several crimes before the 2024 election, the Supreme Court decided that he was allowed to run for president before he had to serve his sentence, he won, pardoned himself and the Supreme Court also decided that the president should have full criminal immunity. So he did do illegal things, was found guilty and convicted, the law just doesn't apply to him.
