Why is all this in land nearly uninhabited and completely undeveloped when the bottom half of the red square is parallel to the UK and the upper half parallel to Sweden? Very mysterious. It gets weirder with the conspiracies saying it's where Hyperborea was or Tartaria etc. Is there something they don't want us to know?

so was most of Britain at one stage. Europe was pretty hostile. we started clearing marshland and building rivers/streams during the bronze age.

If you look at Canada's population distribution, most of it is snuggled up to its southern border and becomes sparse as you look farther north. Nobody likes to be cold.

Most of it is very much inland, summers are good but the winter are super cold even areas relatively far to the south like. Novosobirsk.
Scandinavia has the gulf stream which makes winter way milder.
In Lofoten way up north in Norway the weather is rarely bow -5C (23f) in peak winter.

Oceans anchor the temperature, especially through their warm/cold streams, thats why coastal regions dont get too cold in winter or too hot in summer. There is no sea there to anchor it so the temps go fron -40 C in winter to 40 C in summer, so while maybe it is not strictly a dessert its definately not a piece of cake to live there.
Same in siberia and why prisoners were sent there to work.

(1) It's cold as shit.
(2) It's dry as shit.
(3) England is only warm because of the Atlantic current which brings warm water from the equator. That latitude everywhere else on earth is (1) cold as fuck.
People don't like to live where there is no water and it's cold as fuck half (or more) the year.

Continental climate, deep inland. Means the land mass heats up in the summer greater than regions near sea and cools down more in the winter. Extreme differences in summer and winter temps are not good for agriculture etc.

Forgot to add, UK and Sweden are surrounded by sea which helps to stabilise seasonal temp fluctuations.
