NYC subway infrastructure is too old to have the trains stop at the exact same place give or take 1-5 inches so they can have security gates that open when the train arrives

You need automatic train control to install proper platform doors and NYC hasn't finished the massive job of overhauling the signal system so you get this halfassed solution. Cost for ATC and platform doors would be in the tens or hundreds of billions for the entire NYC subway. Or you could fix society instead?
