It is not a worship of the European God, not an attempt to connect with spain nor the west, it is an argument raised against europe and the first world. An exaltation of christ, of the christian religion, a light cast to warm the interior but also show europe and specially the united states the shadow they cast: their failure to Christ, their hypocrisy, their atheism and materialism. It is a way to take the historic mantle of christentdom from europe and the US; first it was the jews who rejected christ, now it is the whites who do. So the mantle is thrown to a race who feels, who is cruel and loving, whose not spiritually destroyed by nihilism, who suffers and struggles, and the wounds of that struggle, of poverty and suffering, are the stigmata of our nation. For so suffered christ and lived homeless in the desert, so do we, hispanics, suffer and are detached brought to pain and martyrdom
