If he can't then there will come a point when people around Trump start ditching him. J.D Vance has big political aspirations of his own, he'd like to run for POTUS one day, and if you know anything about Vance it's that he's ruthless. He would have no problem abandoning Trump if it would be politically advantageous to do so.
The problem is, the GOP has been the MAGA party for a while now. And Vance wouldn't be welcome or comfortable with the never Trumpers, Romney and co.
So at what point does 'Trump' become nonviable politically? That's the point you'll see people jump ship.
