It takes ~4-5 years before they start giving a harvest and a couple more years before they're truly mature. That's very fast for nut trees.
People in previous threads were complaining that berries don't have enough calories. Well, 100g of hazelnuts is ~628 Calories with 60.75% being fat and 14.95% being protein.

If you have 1 hazelnut tree giving you 25 lbs of nuts in a year, that's 11,350g, so 71,278 Calories. If you need 2000 calories a day, that's over 35 days of calories.

First you plant a tree, then you plant a vine that climbs the tree and then you plant some fruit bushes that fill in the space below the tree canopy.
You could have nuts or stonefruit or apples or something with a maypop or grape or kiwi vine and some blueberries or something below.

I mean, you would want a more varied diet than that, but it goes to show it really doesn't take that much space if you go with perennials.
Just make sure you place the tallest trees in the Northernmost part of the property so they don't give everything else too much shade.

zone 7 still gives you a lot of options for tasty fruits, though. Pretty much all berries and stone fruit can handle those temps.
It's a shame we don't have good cold tolerant fatty fruits.

How about a jujube? If eaten early, they're crunchy like an apple and taste a bit like caramel. If you wait a bit longer, they get soft/wrinkly and are called Chinese dates.

4b zone reporting in (high Rockies). No fruit or nut trees here. But maybe I could grow hazelnuts in a micro clime. My berries are doing good but fucking squirrels keep eating them. Was trapping them but there are like 100 here. Season is short, one wipeout and your done for the year.
