Somone probably fudged something in interpreting data becuase even if it's wrong and goes nowhere getting your name out and press by claiming to overturn what's long been the most accepted theory on something helps secure future funding or something like that. When other people have also looked over the data and similarly concluded that a crunch seems more likely than heat death or a rip I'll be interested. It is a more romantic idea that there could be some sort of infinite recourse. There is of course also always the possibility the resulting singularly wouldn't be any different from normal blackholes and would just on an unfathomly long timescale slowly bleed off matter as hawking radiation until nothing exists though.
