A Taiwanese women’s football coach has come under fire for allegedly forcing students to donate blood hundreds of times in order to receive school credits mandatory for graduation.

Zhou Tai-ying, a prominent women’s football trainer, has been dubbed the “vampire” coach by Taiwanese media, because during her time at the National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), she allegedly forced students to give blood numerous times, on consecutive days, donations that she claimed were linked to 32 school credits necessary for graduation. Terrified of not being able to finish school unless they did the coach’s bidding, some students had their blood collected hundreds of times in a matter of days, with some claiming that harvesters could no longer find viable veins.

The scandal began when one of the victims, a student surnamed Jian, came out to accuse Zhou of taking advantage of her and other students. Joan claimed that during her time at the National Taiwan Normal University, the football coach forced her to undergo more than 200 blood donations in exchange for course credits, adding that the blood was collected by untrained personnel, for so-called “on-campus research experiments”.

“Sometimes this involved continuous sampling for up to 14 days, on occasion three times a day, from 5 am to 9 pm,” Jian said. “By the eighth consecutive day of blood draws, they could barely find a vein in either arm. They even tried my wrist and failed. It was excruciating. I completely broke down. It took six tries before they finally succeeded!”

According to Jian’s accusations, the blood donations were tied to 32 academic credits required for graduation, so students who refused risked not being able to finish school or even expulsion. The scandal inspired other students to speak out against the 61-year-old football coach, with one of them claiming to have taken a leave of absence because of long-term bullying by the trainer.
Following the nationwide controversy, on July 13, the university announced that it had dismissed Zhou from her administrative and coaching roles, and even posted a handwritten letter of apology from the coach on its website. However, people are asking for more punitive measures to be taken against her, especially since the reasons behind these mandatory blood donations by young students remain unknown.

“The university just dismissed the coach? What a joke. I do not believe this was solely the teacher’s idea. What would a teacher even gain from this? Who is actually profiting the most?” one person commented on social media.
