Yeah. When Bakhmut finally fell after a year long meatgrind and the Wagner mutiny, the holhols fell back to a suburb immediately to the West, which Russia is still meatgrinding currently over 2 years later. And the meatgrind of Pokrovsk has been going on for over a year now and has turned into a meme basically.

Probably inconsequential to be honest. Short of some widespread collapse of their lines, the war will continue on as it has for the last few years.
Neither side has any real technological advantage on the other, and the defending side has entrenched itself. WW1 trench warfare, but with extra gay drone attacks. War has always sucked for the soldiers, but this variant seems to be specially pozzed.

It's not particularly important to the front line overall. It makes some of Ukraine's supply lines more difficult, and it slightly shortens/simplifies the length of the front for Russia. That's about it.

>@grok, give me a quick rundown on Pokrovsk, in the context of the Denazification of Ukraine
Pokrovsk’s importance in the Russo-Ukrainian War lies in its role as a logistical lifeline, economic hub, and defensive stronghold in Donetsk Oblast. Its capture would deal a severe blow to Ukraine’s ability to sustain its eastern front and industrial output, while providing Russia with a strategic advantage in the Donbas. As of July 24, 2025, Russian forces are intensifying efforts to envelop the city, exploiting Ukraine’s manpower shortages, but Ukrainian defenses, bolstered by drone operations and resilience, continue to hold despite immense pressure. The outcome of this battle could shape the trajectory of the war, influencing both military dynamics and potential ceasefire negotiations.

huh? I am not sure I believe that anything near the frontline is contributing meaningfully to industrial output, let alone a besieged city.

When I mentioned Pokrovsk’s role in sustaining Ukraine’s industrial output, I was referring to its pre-war and early-war significance, particularly through the Pischane coal mine, which is the largest coking coal facility in Ukraine and critical for steel production

This war is won whenever Ukraine runs out of manpower, it's not a race to occupy territory.

It's an attrition warfare scenario. Something Russians are very, very good at. If it was combined arms or mobile warfare Russia would lose. Thankfully, neither Ukraine or the West have the resources to launch much less sustain such an attack on Russia. Even Nazi Germany failed to muster the production and logistical capacity to sustain their Biltzkrieg.

I think Russia is invincible simply because the military buildup that would be required to destroy it is so enormous, not only would it take years, but it would be so obvious and apparent it could easily be nullified by nuclear first-strike.

Guys, be serious. You can't expect the casualty ratio to be much different than that. This is the real world we are talking about. Ukraine has the advantages of the defender, plus a shit load of western military technology. On the other hand, the Russians haven't been able to conquer Ukraine yet. We are talking about Russians capturing square millimeters per day. And the Kremlin is know for hiding casualties. Be balanced and emotionally withdrawn in your assessments.

> Ukraine has the advantages of the defender
This is a real war, not a video game. Ukraine doesn't get a 50% boost because they are defenders. This war is a artillery and increasingly drones war. Russia has a massive advantage in all those areas. Also on a tactical level there isn't a defender vs attacker, or at least the distinction isn't solid. There are attacks and counter attacks. Some positions change hands multiple times during a day.
>plus a shit load of western military technology.
Der wunderwaffe? Why don't we hear about Himars anymore? Why do we only hear about f-16 when one gets shot down?
>On the other hand, the Russians haven't been able to conquer Ukraine yet.

What makes you think these will fare any better than all the defense lines they've made before them? Nothing they can throw together now will ever be as heavily fortified as the starting line which they had a full 8 years to dig into, and could do it in a state of peace without bombs and drones harassing them at every turn.

Yes, and that's now finally happened. Just like how before the battle of Bakhmut even started the Russians had to reach it in the first place. Fighting to reach a place and then the subsequent battle for it are two completely separate things and you shouldn't conflate the two.

Bakhmut indeed was a long battle, but it wasn't as long as many think because much of that time involved maneuvering into position before it even started. The same goes here (or anywhere).

That said, I don't think Pokrovsk will take anywhere near as long as Bakhmut did, or even Avdeevka. Ukraine is much weaker now than they were back then. Its already clear that Russia has Pokrovsk in the bag.

It was a retard take even back then desu. The IRL take I've heard most at the time was "fuck, now it's either several years of war, or a quick ending and a decade of domestic terrorism". So far the only difference with how this turned out is that my biys' club back then expected most of the fighting to be done by guerrillas, not an externally equipped army.

Russia and Ukraine keep doing dead body exchanges where Russia hands over thousands of dead Ukrainians in exchange for maybe a couple dozen or so dead Russians. That's what the real k/d ratio is. Ukraine can say any bullshit it wants, but it can't back it up.

Nothing says it has to be.
>Russians have innovated on this concept by first launching an invasive war and then aiming for attrition.
Read up on Julius Caesar's conquest of Gaul. This was an unprovoked invasion Caesar launched so he was the invader, but nonetheless when he laid siege to the Gallic stronghold of Alesia, he built his own fortifications around it. The Romans were masters of the art of being the attackers, but then switching to a defensive role in enemy territory and forcing their opponents to become attackers just in order to defend themselves. In the siege of Alesia the Romans had the "defender's advantage" even though morally they were the attackers, clearly.

To be honest I really didn't think it would drag out this many years like it has. I always did believe that Russia would win though, and still do. A lot of people didn't believe this back in autumn of 2022 when Ukraine regained a lot of territory. This was before Russia began their first mobilization so the real war hadn't even begun yet by this point. Russia went in with like 180k troops at first iirc. This was insufficient against the ~700k or whatever Ukraine had. The fact Ukraine was able to regain some territory back then shouldn't have been surprising when you keep that in mind. But once Russia addressed this issue, and mobilized, then its been a consistent (albeit slow) Russian advance ever since then.

I don't know what Russia was thinking at the start, but they didn't initially go into this with the level of strength this type of war requires. But that is in the past.

Because you're attributing Russian control over large swaths of territory which they never actually did control. When they did their race to Kyiv thing at the start they only ever controlled the roads and a few key towns and that was it. When they retreated, they left by the same roads they came and that was it. That was all they ever controlled or lost.

But disingenuous pro-Ukrainian shills love to twist the facts and exaggerate what Russia actually controlled and falsely claim they had full control over huge swaths of land. Why? So they can then inflate the importance of Ukraine's "epic" retaking of this land. But its all bullshit.

Russians would move even MORE back to consolidate line if it werent for 3 years of volonteers joining by about 1000-1500 a month because Cuctin and high command deems it unnecessary to mobilise more men
They didnt do even 1 proper mobilisation and theres 1.5 million men serving in Russian forces while 180k do all of the fighting versus 600k hohols

once again you're deliberately asking a stupid question and you know it. this makes you look stupid. i will answer it in good faith so that others may see. russia underprioritised kharkov sector (the front was so sparsely manned that many ukrainian formations simply walked through unopposed) to try and hold kherson (which they fought very hard hard for, many ukrainian formations got shellacked and 'lost their combat capability' as the ukrainian strategy for reducing this bridgehead was to strain russian logistical capacity and suppress and damage their one reliable route of resupplying their forces over the dniepr), and in the end they lost both since kherson bridgehead was not sustainable. as for current russian offensive, i fully expect pokrovsk to fall before end of summer, siversk and konstantinovka will fall before the end of the year

>So you're seriously claiming that Russia never controlled kherson city, or a significant part of kharkiv oblast?
I was referring to the north. Yes, they also had these places and then retreated from them. But you can be sure they'll come back for them before all is said and done. The issue with Kherson is that it was on the wrong side of the river. It was a logistical nightmare. Taking that at the start of the war was premature. Russia needs to finish mopping things up east of the Dnieper before they can worry about crossing to the west of it.

This. 2 years is what it took Russia to overcome the Zelensky line (or whatever its called) that was built up for 8 years during time of peace with concrete bunkers and the works. Sure, Ukraine can scramble and dig some trenches and throw down some dragon's teeth and that's certainly better than nothing, but it won't be anywhere close to the line they had at the start.

But additionally, a line can only function if you have soldiers to man it. That's something Ukraine is running low on these days. Desertions and mutinies are becoming increasingly common among what few soldiers Ukraine still has left.

>When they retreated,
An interesting anecdote from a long interview with a Russian serviceman (forgot what his role was, tank commander iirc) who was deployed at Kiev — they were constantly on the offensive and genuinely were convinced they were winning. The order to withdraw came with CO commenting that the diplomats have done the rest and the mission had been accomplished. They then packed up and left uncontested.

Kherson offensive itself was a slaughter for Ukrainians but in the end with the few bridges over Dnieper looking more and more like swiss cheese (thanks to the west providing an ample supply of longer range artillery systems — back when their stock wasn't depleted) and a good chunk of the city's civilians still living in their homes and requiring an endless supply of amenities and no reinforcements to draw from pulling out was the only recourse. Again the withdrawal was well-choreographed and uncontested.

Now Kharkov — that was a retreat. In many cases — a rout, even. That was the one direction from which so many troops had been shifted to Kherson that some part of the frontline had as few as 3-4 soldiers per kilometer. The move itself was well-telegraphed, but far too many officers were to afraid to be the bringers of bad news.

When arguing with someone pointing at the early maps it is however sufficient to just mention that Russia has been steadily gaining ground ever since it mobilized (once!). Meanwhile Ukraine has been having to resort to grabbing men off streets for the past 2 years because no one volunteers anymore — and the civilians are acting more and more aggressive towards the press-ganger goons.

Show me an army that isn't shit and corrupt. At least the corruption is being purged, bit by bit from your army. The German army is filled with schnitzel eating, fat homosexuals and that includes the big dude to the last cunt. If a choice is ever to be made, the Russian army is by far the best one.

hey burger oblast amerikanski.

The town is worthless now after The Greatest Army on Earth tried to take it for 2years now. All supply routes and lines have been taken and more or less, this is a pile of rubble the russians might (or not) take in the next 3 months with insanely high losses. That will be pbbly the last town Russia takes before seizing to exist in late November.

My guess it is like the battle of Verdun in WW1, only its being fought over a series of small towns rather than just one place around one big city.
The German idea was to bleed the French dry of manpower by attacking a city the French would be bound to defend. This allowed them to concentrate well supplied forces, supported by shitloads of artillery, in one place, rather than than fighting a battle of attrition along an extended front. Attrition warfare along an extended front line is less effective and far harder to manage.
I think the Russians are doing the same thing, only in this case the Ukrainians hold on as long as they can becasue they know just giving up and retreating each time the Russians begin a pincer around a town will just lead to a steady push back, which would have serious political implications both at home and abroad. The Ukies will also have invested significant resources in fortifying their positions, which they will not want to give up before getting their money's worth in Russian blood.

The other thing to consider is that its not always easy to fall back once combat contact has been initiated. Retreating in the face of close enemy contact risks incurring significant casualties without inflicting many in return, it has a demoralizing effect on the troops, and can also risk losing significant equipment and supplies in the process.

Obviously both sides crunch the numbers, do their own math and have decided that going at it like this for years is the best option in either case. The Russians must be hoping the Ukrainians will run out of warm bodies before they do. The Ukrainians must be convinced that they are inflicting enough damage to make these battles favorable, despite their own losses. Attrition warfare is an act of desperation though, initiated by a side which has failed in its initial objectives. Its a tacit admission that they have nothing left in their bag of tricks.

it was strategically irrelevant, which of course of why ukraine spent so much time and energy fortifying and defending it. all ukrainian soldiers have died for 'strategically irrelevant' territory, which i'm sure is what their families were told too. 'your son/husband/father/brother died a pointless death in a meaningless battle for a strategically irrelevant position'. if you want a real answer, the point was the battle itself, pinning down large ukrainian manpower reserves that could've been used in their summer '23 offensive, without using russian regular forces which were depleted from '22 and still waiting for mobilised forces to be brought up to combat readiness. additionally it was a stepping stone to chasov yar, which is the real operational prize in the sector. that town sits on high ground that overlooks the the remaining fortified cities in donbass that ukraine still holds. the russians have almost total control over it, and slavyansk and kramatorsk sit in the lowland, without that high ground those two cities are practically indefensible

Yes. There is also supposedly a ton of bunkers and military fortifications that where built in the soviet era which are still very useful. This is just going to go on at a slow rate until either side runs out of men/equipment or decide that enough is enough.
