It is one of the best countries in Africa. The reason is that after independece rather than trying and failing to maintain a state they couldn't afford like most african nations, they disbanded their army, and cut down state functions to a minimum. Then just invested in basic things like education. While places like Zimbabwe and others tried to have all the things that western governments had out of envy. But not being able to afford it police and civil service became corrupt & parasitic, meaning their economies focusing on extraction and exploitation rather then wealth creation.(Russia has the same problem BTW).

Botswana avoided the trap, by simply living within it's means and not creating anti social incentives in their society.
