Violence 'becoming the norm' for Winnipeg firefighters on the job

Firefighters being hit in the face with a metal pole, punched in the stomach and threatened with death by a person who woke up from a possible overdose and pulled a knife on them are among the latest violent incidents the head of the union for firefighters in Winnipeg says highlight the need for legislative change to protect first responders.

"Unfortunately, this is just becoming a norm for us," said Nick Kasper, president of the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg.

"You have enough of these near misses and eventually we're going to get to a situation where we have a serious but preventable outcome."

One recent incident came early Friday morning, when police say a man armed with a metal pole began hitting a fire engine responding to a call on Princess Street. After a crew member got out, he was confronted by the man, who struck the crew member with the pole. The first responder suffered minor injuries.

20 years ago in grade school I was told by a teacher that he brother wanted to be a firefighter but he was fit and trained and ready to go, only to be flipping burgers in his 30s because they were only hiring Women and Minorities. Her words. Essentially a quote, women and minorities. So I never became a firefighter, and Im a big guy. Thats the exact type of thing I should be doing.

Every time I see one of these stories it puts a smile on my face. Just hire some niggers! Send the niggers into the crackhouse fires! Let the niggers get bashed with poles by insane shitskins. Im not putting your fire out, and I hope you burn.

When I was a kid I thought it would be a lot of time spent at the station with 1% of the time being chaos. Turns out in reality firefighters are obviously the first on the scene of nearly every 911 call that doesnt involve guns or danger to their lives. Like they show up for absolutely everything, may as well be as active as cops.

A lot of it is waste and my personal thought is maybe they should be in an active state of readiness more often than constantly deployed (and unable to swiftly react to *ACTUAL FIRES* which is their job) but yea I also understand a lot of medical issues are time sensitive, and firefighters are trained to provide some level of medical care until paramedics can arrive.Saves lives. Lives>Shekels.

We can abolish pensions but youd have to increase pay to allow for personal saving. Id be in favor of that since it gives people the money they actually earned up front. This goes double in any dangerous profession where dying early is a real possibility due to their workplace hazards.

Im in favor of more taxation because it brings the system down, which is good. For White people. A dying system is a closed border system.

Most people in the private sector have pensions desu, or they pay into retirement. If they get a pension, it was always factored into their pay to begin with. So if you remove pensions, pay should go up yes. You could reduce the overall amount required from entitlements by simply putting it on their pay 20-40 years earlier. That said, pensions are a way of taking advantage of inflation.

In bizarro land where I want to do whats good for the system, Id simply tie welfare to training in a trade, which we obviously need and are short on.
To get welfare they would need to work in trades until they can get a real job in said career. Germany had them build their own homes, gave half the funding as a forgivable loan and paid them and others to build the rest as welfare.

Id cut down on overall government jobs, bureaucracy and waste but pay the remaining workers proper wages as anyone else would receive. No unearned wages, but that which is earned one is obviously entitled to. So the question is how much does your work earn you. More than it does today. Pay should be like 200$ an hour if we tracked the 80s rates of inflation, but alas theres too many shitskins and brownflation with no production has killed our currencies. Youd need a time machine.

pensions should probably be eliminated across the board and replaced with self-funded retirement accounts. the arms race of who gets to actually have money as an elderly person based on who works where has created adversarial relationships between most people, and a house divided cannot stand. as it stands now, govt workers are stealing way more than their fare share from average workers. if average people cant afford homes but politicians and govt workers live in oppulence, you have a major problem

abolish mandatory government run pension plans. then you can save the money, invest it as you see fit, or use in the moment for what you need NOW. these weekly 'contributions' take away quite a bit of income. same for what we have here called 'EI" or Unemployment Insurance - a mandatory payment you can't avoid which goes towards money you can sometimes claim if you lose your job. also reduce income taxes.

Well my point was almost all the people who come to mind as representing the figurehead of the concept of "the workers" - in political movements and historical times have pensions generally. Thats a huge sector of society, yea maybe Mcdonalds cashier doesnt bring in those type of benefits but communists sort of spend all their time focusing on unionizing and weaponizing large sectors of the economy against the government and demanding increasing unsustainable benefits packages is a key strategy of theirs. So yea most people have pensions, and if they didnt - and their work mattered, communists would have them strike and shut that sector of the economy off.

absolutely. my work comes with grading and metricks. everything i do is measured and compared with other stores depts etc. i MUST perform, because my company MUST move product in order to function. this means i MUST prioritize the customer and treat them well, since every customer is keeping us afloat. govt has a completely different set of incentive structures. they take your money by force and give it to an entitled parasite. i went to the dmv. everyone that worked there was fat. like, wtf? not only fat but ill tempered, gossips, generally just wanton. being around them feels like my soul is being sucked out of my body, like im in a time trap or just stepped into a world where gravity doesn't work quite the same. that's ontological, that's fundamental. these people become something else through their parasitic lifestyles. i hate to say it, but they become something that is not human

pretty much yeah since any complaints are dealt with by the same government structure which is employing the disdainful staff in the first place and which has encouraged that attitude in the first place (since attitude towards customers flows downhill from management).
>being around them feels like my soul is being sucked out of my body, like im in a time trap
i know what you mean lol. you can definitely tell that theres something different at work in those places. its certainly not about having to please the customer. its about tolerating the customer (worthless pleb) and making sure they understand that they are stupid and of no consequence, which is exactly what government thinks of us.

absolutely. i found it most egregious when i would call "crisis hotlines" when i would be going through a hard time, and the staff struggled with basic empathy and listening, and if you brought up a verboten subject, hoo boy they slam you into the ground, you are no longer a person going through something, you are a problem that needs to be dealt with. the women were the worst, sometimes i would encounter a man who could defuse a high intensity situation with intelligence, but with women it always devolves into shouting and hanging up. so much for "helping professions." lol these people are quite literally PAID TO TALK ON THE PHONE WITH A VULNERABLE PERSON GOING THROUGH CRISIS and they act more like moderators than humans who actually have empathy. i dont think people even comprehend how big this problem is. its even bigger when you realize its not just how they act at their job. this is ontological. they BECOME THIS THING THAT ISNT FULLY HUMAN. this is much bigger than money, although the parasitic theft is a big problem. its in how these insitutions fundamentally alter the society and how "people" relate to one another. its like there is this big evil empire machine and the borg who join it become parts of it
