Thermonuclear war was unironically pretty likely for a while there. This could still escalate if Moldova, Poland or other European countries get dragged in. It's foolish to assume this will "end" if Zelensky is removed or even in Keev or the entire Ukrainian state falls.
Consider Indochina after the US withdrawal from Vietnam. Things certainly didn't "end" there for some time after.

It was not aimless but it was disorganized for the type of operation they were going into. It may have even succeeded if certain units had not turned into complete parade troops and were unable to achieve any objective, most notably the 1st guard tank army which has since then changed multiple commanders. The VDV, marines and the units from the southern military region did their part and broke trough the south, Wagner later on helped the break in the east in Popasna. But the units from the central military region, which had been turned into parade troops over the years completely failed with not being able to push even to the outskirts of Kharkov and Sumy not only that but their supply lines were being decimated by sabotage groups. This is what ultimately grinded to a halt the entire initial invasion. If they had managed to surround Sumy and Kharkov, Ukraine would have capitulated by now, due to manpower issues.
