They had a perfect formula: take the most ridiculous current event that week, maybe a secondary ridiculous thing as a b plot, and work their libertarian "bith sides are stupid guys heres the center position" take into it with some patented fart and shit humor to boot. The problem is that to be that current with irl events, they have a crazy production schedule and they were already 100 millionaires by the late 00's so who wants to work that hard? It's a combination of age and success dulling their edge, and shopping out work to faggy California writers that makes the show unrecognizable from the quality satire it used to be. Now its just "le orange hitler sucks" show #753,871. Also it doesn't help that daily reality has become so absurd nowadays that even "edgy" satire is tame and toothless by comparison.
