Afterwards he was set up at a jewish owned comedy club for a year despite being (according to him in his autobiography) not very good. But his jewish sponsor loved what he did and encouraged him to be more edgy and take on Christian White men.

You need to keep in mind that there weren't a lot of options for most people back then, or really until about 15 years ago. You couldn't just go online and stream videos of different comics doing stand up. And they only had live comedy clubs in large cities. You could buy a record of a comedian doing their routine, but only if they were big enough to cut a record and you were already familiar enough with them to buy the record. If you had HBO, you could watch their comedy specials and see a wider range of comedians. But for most people, their main exposure to stand up comedy was when a comedian would go on a late night talk show and do their act for a few minutes. Or fucking Saturday Night Live. And since those shows were on broadcast network tv, they were pretty limited on how edgy or blue they could get.
George Carlin was popular because he was edgier and more clever than the generic stand up acts that most people were exposed to.
