You don't need to believe in a specific god or anything in particular, there are many paths to realisation. You can be a monotheist hindu, a pantheist hindu or an atheist hindu as long as you recognise the false nature of reality and that you should aim to escape it to remove all suffering through realisation.
Or you can chill and keep suffering - no one really cares because it's a universal mechanism, not some guy in heaven dictating who he does or does not like.
The "gods" are born of this universe, they did not create it. They are subject to the same rules we are but on a higher plane - a plane you can attain through realisation and understanding of the world.
