There's a cruel lack of understand of the core tenets of these two dogmad by Christians due to the nature of their faith. Anyone who believes in "that who made us and the universe alike whoever that may be" is believed to worship God. Before being called by God in Genesis 12, Abram already worshiped him. His faith was developed through his own reasoning and questioning of the prevalent idolatry.
From the point of view of an idolater that belief system is foreign. You have to be worshipping something specific. Saturn, the cube, moloch, the moon, whatever it may be. You'll put words in other people's minds because you struggle to cope with the fact that other people's belief is much simpler than that (way simpler than any trinity).
A jew or a muslim would refer to any man who recognizes and worships his creator (whoever that may be) without tainting that image with his imagination or with idols as one who believes in God.
