We're living in late stage socialism.

The government will get bigger and bigger until the market can't handle it anymore and a cup of coffee costs 10,000 dollars and society implodes to rock bottom.

Or the government will get bigger and bigger but use technology to bail itself out so we finally live in a post-human dystopia where government officials control a terminator AI that rules every aspect of the underclass with an iron fist until the government officials merge with technology and the transhuman hivemind finally destroys humanity and ends history and the biosynths roam the galaxy looking for organic life to wipe out.

I'm hoping for the former rather than the latter.

There is a good timeline where people realise that the corruption is caused by the destruction of freedom but that would require independent thought which is difficult.
