Morality is subjective. They really believed what they were doing was for the good of humanity. Also, it's much more complex than just their religion. Their most brutal sacrifices were commonly done to criminals and prisoners of war. It sometimes doubled as a way of forcing obedience to the state through fear, and to discourage potential political uprisings. Think Roman crucifixion, but with the cool added benefit of like, appeasing the gods and shit. Again, sacrifice wasn't exclusive to those groups of people, but I'm just giving an example of how nuanced it could get.
