Basically a law they've been pushing for years in the name of "protecting the chillems". It requires ANY website/platform that has user generated content, including small non-descript forums from the 00s to verify user IDs from British IPs or face fines/bans from the British government.

Many smaller UK based websites are simply shutting up shop because they can not afford to put ID checks in place. It basically streamlines the British Internet experience into big websites and apps, where we can be more tightly monitored.

I'm going to have to finally buy a fucking 4chan pass and use VPNs. Gay ass government niggers

As of today, July 25, 2025, 4chan is **not blocked** in the UK.

However, it is currently under **investigation by Ofcom**, the UK's communications regulator, under the **Online Safety Act 2023**. This investigation, which began on June 10, 2025, is focused on 4chan's compliance with its duties to protect users from illegal content. Specifically, Ofcom is looking into:

* **Failure to respond to statutory information requests:** 4chan allegedly has not responded to formal requests for information from Ofcom.
* **Failure to complete and keep a record of a suitable illegal content risk assessment:** Websites where users can share content are required to assess the risk of UK users encountering illegal content.
* **Non-compliance with safety duties regarding illegal content:** This includes measures to prevent individuals from encountering priority illegal content and to quickly remove such content.

If 4chan is found to be non-compliant, Ofcom has the power to impose fines of up to £18 million or 10% of their global revenue. In serious cases, they could also seek a court order to require third parties (like ISPs) to block access to 4chan in the UK.

It's important to note that while 4chan is currently accessible, the ongoing investigation could potentially lead to access restrictions in the future.

Control. It's been a thing for years. We had the Snooper's Charter back in 2016, which took half a decade to push through, which required all ISPs to log 6 months of Internet traffic for everybody, and allowed for real time monitoring of anyone's Internet activity at any given time.

It's always been pushed with the reasoning that it's for safety and security. This is a natural conclusion to it all. It means that everyone has to use big websites online, and can be more easily monitored.

So, isn't this just another way to further corporatize and centralize the internet? That's fucked up.
