What does /pol/ think about Ukrainians?

Personally, I think they are a simple farming people.

personally I think they shouldn't exist because all they seem to do is beg for gibs and require babysitting. They aren't like us at all and it's a shithole (I went to Kyiv in 2017 and it was kinda lame)

They are, unsurprisingly, something like a Russian with a streak of Balkan barbarism in them. Chaotic and resilient, but with an unfortunate mean and bitter twist to them. Not as chill and fun as Russians or Balkanites, but with the worst qualities of both.

I've had the complete opposite experience. Russian humor is often just poorly disguised seething while Ukrainians are actually funny.

There are certain issues of compatibility between our various European nationalities. I'm on the periphery, and tend to get on well with those from other peripheries, like the English, the Russians, and Rumanos, and less so with those from Mitteleuropa. You probably just don't have the right kind of disposition for Russians.

i suppose something I should have emphasised a bit more is how very similar they are anyway. Your observation doesn't ring true at all in view of this. The differences I noted are rather subtle things.
I lived in Russia for several years, and knew many Ukrainians who lived there, and now know many Ukrainian refugees living here so I know what I'm talking about. And there are differences across the Ukraine too. Those in the far east ARE Russians, those in the main east and north are nearly Russians, and you have to go a long way over to Lvov and environs to meet anything really distinctly odd. I know some Hutsuls, by the way, and they are a little bit different again.

Not really. The land out east was basically empty 300 years ago, most of the people who settled it came from the West. Including from Germany incidentally, there used to be loads of German communities in Eastern Ukraine. There were some Russian immigrants but as far as I know they never made up the majority. Also culturally they're quite different as the people in Ukraine weren't subjected to the same kind of nonsense that Russians have been subject to for 25 years.

When I said east and north, I was thinking Kharkov, Chernigov and Sumy. These places have been continually inhabited since Ancient Rus'. The territories you are talking about are the Wild Field. They had Germans, and they had Greeks, Bulgars, Albanians too. But Russians-proper were the majority. This produced a russophone society that might as well have been Russian, albeit with a bit of 'mystery meat' flavour now and then. The Crimea is much like that too.
As for territories that really were settled by Ukrainians proper, that would be more around Dnipro and Zaporozhya.

They're not that different from the rest of Ukraine, outside of those wild fields there weren't many migrations. The Russian Empire only gained control of what would become Ukraine 250 or so years ago and they lost control around 150 years after that with their defeat in WW1, not a lot changed in that time. There was no real industry so the only people migrating were farmers.
